Do you know which traffic violations (tickets) will actually increase your insurance rates? Do you know of any tickets that you could get, that don’t lead to rate increases?
Summer has the highest number of tickets issued out of any season of the year, bar none. There are many reasons for this, but it happens to be the season that has more drivers on the roads, and people are paying less attention to speed limits, stop signs, traffic lights, and other rules for safe driving.
You might think that a speeding ticket or other traffic violation will be little more than a minor nuisance, something you can pay in a few weeks and be done with it. But the repercussions can be long lasting. You could end up seeing an increase in your insurance premiums, costing you more annually for quite some time.
So, do all tickets raise your rates? Not necessarily. Parking tickets do not appear on your drivers license abstract therefore they do not affect your insurance rates. You may have noticed the “red light” cameras recently installed throughout the York and Durham Region. Tickets from photo radar have no insurance consequences as the camera cannot identify a specific drivers license. These tickets are assigned to the vehicle, not the driver.
Below is a list of some traffic violations that will affect your insurance rates.
- Reckless Driving
- Driving without a license
- Careless driving
- Failure to stop
- Driving over posted speed limit
- Improper turn
- Improper pass
- Following too closely
- Failure to yield
- Driving without insurance
- Seat belt infractions
This is just a general list – there are many more infractions you can be charged with. However it illustrates that having any of these infractions on your drivers abstract could result in your insurance company taking away discounts, adding a surcharge, or altering your insurance driving record – all resulting in an increased rate.
So take the time to observe and obey posted speed limits, make a full and complete stop at all stop signs and wear your seatbelt!
